Pearls from the Old Prayer Meetings

During the last few years, we have been listening to reel-to-reel recordings (mostly from the 1960s and 70s) of Preacher Clark’s old prayer meetings. What a wonderful trove of timeless treasures these recordings are! We have assembled lists of the most striking comments Preacher Clark made during his sermons, as well as other comments taken from testimonies of others who attended those meetings. We call these wise sayings, "pearls", and you can read many of them here.

June 2015 Pearls

June 1
You know what is esteemed as the greatest thing on the face of the earth among mankind today – False religion. That is what Jesus was taking about when he said, “That which is highly esteemed among men is an abomination in the sight of God.”
- George C. Clark

June 2
Whatever happens to you will be for your good, for Paul said, “We know that all things work together for good to them who are called according to His purpose and love God.” I believe we love him. I believe I love Him. Praise God, because I love everyone of you. That’s how I know.
- Hilliard "Uncle Joe" Murray

June 3
If there’s anything in the world you can do for anybody to get them right with God, do it.
- Grandma Edna

June 4
There is coming a time when the testimony God gives you will be your last one.
- George C. Clark

June 5
You don’t have to have a lot of education to be holy.
- Sister Gladys

June 6
The life in the Spirit is too good to tell; you’ll never tell it. You can only do what Sister Edna once said: “tell at it”.
- George C. Clark

June 7
Don’t fall out with the world if they think you are crazy. They just don’t know what a good thing they are missing. They don’t know how real it is.
- George C. Clark

June 8
It’s awful when you get out of tune with God. Nothing sounds right or works right.
- George C. Clark

June 9
Every time a test comes, it drives you closer to God or further away.
- Grandma Edna

June 10
I’ve had the best time in my life I’ve ever had being in holiness, and I’m not ashamed of it a bit!
- Brother Earl Pittman

June 11
I’m glad we know. Knowing is better than believing.
- Brother Earl Pittman

June 12
Eternal life is free, but it’s got a price tag on it: sacrifice of self.
- Brother Earl Pittman

June 13
Sometimes, we work too hard to be free.
- George C. Clark

June 14
If you please God, you’ll enjoy it.
- Grandma Edna

June 15
If you do His will, there is great pleasure in it.
- Hilliard "Uncle Joe" Murray

June 16
There’s no way to prove that God has called you than to have the holy Ghost because Peter said, “The promise is for you and your children, and for those who are afar off, even as many as the Lord thy God shall call.”
- George C. Clark

June 17
There is not a person here who is ready to meet God, and you won’t be ready until you accomplish what God has you here for.
- George C. Clark

June 18
The Scripture says “Seek ye first the kingdom of God AND His righteousness.” Another way of saying that is “be converted AND become as a little child” (GCC adds, “It’s the same thing as “keep His commandments AND do the things that please Him.”
- Hilliard "Uncle Joe" Murray

June 19
There are some things you can please God by doing, but you will be breaking one of the written commandments to do it.
- George C. Clark

June 20
Some think they are not backslidden by telling themselves “I haven’t gone back on God because I don’t love the world, and I’m not going to do what I know is wrong.” You don’t have to do all that to backslide. When Adam and Eve backslid they weren’t trying to be less like God, but more. They weren’t trying to go down; they were trying to go up. Satan said to her, “This will make you more like God, make you wise. That fruit is good; it doesn’t hurt anybody to eat fruit.” She ate it to get promoted but she got demoted. And what Satan offered Jesus in the Temptation is what just about anybody would want; authority here on earth and all the things that go with it. And the angels that fell thought they were being promoted. No doubt Satan thought, “I think I can run things better, if I can get in power.”
- George C. Clark

June 21
The story of Jesus started out in an ox stall, in there with the cattle. And ever since then, people have been trying to get it out of the manger – out of old white-washed buildings and into fine buildings. But when you go to doing that, God walks off. He leaves them there with their nice building and nothing with it. Think of the places of worship today, the nice buildings and all. If they just knew what we’ve found! Yes, “It pleased God through the foolishness of preaching to save those who believe.”
- George C. Clark

June 22
You can’t build God a house. If He would have been interested in that, He would have kept the first temple. Nothing you can build would be as nice as that one.
- George C. Clark

June 23
Mary thought she had Jesus for several days one time, but he wasn’t with her. Some people go all their life and think they have him.
- George C. Clark

June 24
When Mary and Joseph found out they didn’t have their son Jesus, they knew where to go back and get him. They knew they had left him in Jerusalem. That’s one good thing for us. If we leave anything of God behind, we know right where to go back to get it.
- George C. Clark

June 25
The true gospel is not in large buildings; it’s not through the educated professional ministry at all! That’s not the way you get it. You get this on your knees!
- George C. Clark

June 26
It was for the lack of knowledge that the Old Testament children of God failed. That’s what killed Jesus. The Romans say the Jews are responsible, and the Jews say the Romans killed him. I tell you what killed him. Ignorance killed him. Peter said to the Jews on the Day of Pentecost, “whom ye ignorantly crucified”. And Paul said that the men who crucified the Lord would not have done it if they had known what they were doing. They all thought they were doing right.
- George C. Clark

June 27
There is a scripture in Psalms that says “from the rising of the sun until the going down of the same, the name of the Lord is to be praised.” You can’t pray too much, and you can’t praise God too much.
- Brother Frank Griffin

June 28
If you pray through at home, when you come to the meeting, you will have the victory.
- Brother Frank Griffin

June 29
I’m not interested in going to a dead meeting. The Bible says, “Why seek you the living among the dead? He is not here. He is risen.”
- Brother Frank Griffin

June 30
No matter how much the devil comes against you, no matter how many things you say or do wrong, when God touches you, you become a whole man again. And without that wholeness in Christ, you’re not going to be able to walk among men as a witness for God.
- Hilliard "Uncle Joe" Murray
