To Be Known of God and to Know Him

Samuel was known of God before he was conceived in his mother’s womb, because he was an answer to his mother’s prayers. When he was a child in the house of the Lord, God called him by name (1Sam. 3:4–6). But “Samuel did not yet know the LORD, neither was the word of the LORD yet revealed unto him” (1Sam. 3:7).
To be attracted to God doesn’t mean we know Him. To belong to Him doesn’t mean we know Him (Ps. 46:10; Jer. 31:34; Heb. 8:11; Luke 19:42; John 4:42; 10:14).
We begin to learn of Him when we receive of His power. That’s what causes us to know the One who sends or gives that power to us.
Through this power, we learn that all things work together for our good – both the bad and the good. Through the corrections of our errors and the chastisement of the hand of God, we learn who really loves us. And if we are wise, or if we grow wise from it, we will thank and praise Him for it, and not grumble about it (Heb. 12:6–8; Rev. 3:19).
After all that Paul had gone through (2Cor. 6:1–10; 2Tim. 1:12), Paul had yet more to know (Phil. 3:10).
